From Hospital Dialysis Ward to Art Gallery. On permanent display at Northwick Park Hospital Renal Unit.

Not all diseases are preventable but a healthy response to illness - fostered by a positive relationship in the treatment setting - can help combat the secondary problems of depression and isolation. Over four months Gina Glover documented the life of the Renal Centre at Northwick Park Hospital and has transformed the blank walls with her thought-provoking portraits of patients and staff.

Speaking about her work Gina Glover says:

‘There is nothing pleasant about any long term disabling illness, and particularly one like kidney disease. Treatment in hospital is time consuming – individuals spend up to fifteen hours there every week – the person feels exhausted much of the time and there is an ever-present awareness of life’s fragility.

I want the viewer to be drawn into these images, to appreciate the empathy and warmth between patients and staff. We hear so many cynical things

about health care but from my observations, this is not simply a job but a labour of love and for the photographer nothing less than an enormous privilege to observe and document. ‘
